SETUP ENVIRONMENT — BEFORE YOU BEGIN

Prepare the conditions.
Then begin.

01 / 06

Setting up a hardware wallet is a security process, not just an installation. The device helps keep private keys isolated, but good outcomes also depend on your computer, your habits, and how you protect recovery information.

Give yourself an uninterrupted moment in a place where you can keep the device and its screen private. Use a computer you control, connected to a network you trust. Avoid shared or public devices, remote-access sessions, and instructions arriving unexpectedly in chat or email.

This is an independent educational guide, not an official Ledger support channel. Product interfaces can change; confirm current steps with Ledger’s own verified resources before proceeding. Never share secret recovery words with anyone, including someone claiming to help.

SETUP SEQUENCE — OWNER-LED, STEP BY STEP

Move deliberately.
Verify as you go.

02 / 06

The sequence below describes sound general practices. Your precise screens and device prompts may differ by model or software version. Treat the official on-device display and verified manufacturer instructions as the source of current steps.

01

Start with the device

Unbox your device yourself and inspect it before connecting it. A genuine hardware wallet is initialized by its owner; it should not arrive with a recovery phrase already filled in or supplied on a card. If anything seems preconfigured or tampered with, pause and contact the seller through a verified channel.

↘
02

Find the setup software independently

Navigate to Ledger’s official website by typing its address yourself or using a trusted bookmark. Confirm the domain carefully before downloading Ledger Live or following setup directions. Avoid search advertisements, unsolicited messages, QR codes, and links in direct messages that imitate support.

↘
03

Install and verify updates

Use the official installer for your operating system. Keep your computer’s security updates current, then allow the setup software to check device authenticity and firmware status. Read each prompt on both your computer and the physical device; do not approve an action you did not initiate.

↘
04

Create a new wallet on-device

Choose the device’s new-wallet flow if you are setting it up for the first time. Follow the device display and buttons to create a PIN. The screen on the physical device is the trusted place to confirm sensitive operations; your computer may show helpful context but is not a replacement for device confirmation.

↘
05

Write down recovery information

Your device will show a recovery phrase during initialization. Write it down in order, check every word against the screen, and store the written copy offline in a private, physically protected location. Never photograph, type, upload, email, or share the phrase. There is no legitimate support reason to ask for it.

↘
06

Complete the checks before use

Finish any on-device verification prompted by the official app. Review how recovery works before adding meaningful value. If you choose to test recovery, use only the manufacturer’s documented process and keep the phrase offline. Take time to understand network, account, and transaction details before approving.

SECURITY LAYER — RECOVERY IS CONTROL

Your recovery phrase
is the master key.

A recovery phrase can restore access to the wallet’s assets. Anyone who learns it may be able to take control, even without the physical device. The phrase is not a password you should enter into a website, app, support chat, or computer prompt.

Keep it offline and out of photographs, cloud storage, password managers, printers, and shared spaces. Consider how you would protect it from loss, fire, water, and unauthorized access. Make any backup choices based on your own circumstances and risk; no single storage method is right for everyone.

If the phrase has been exposed or you suspect someone else has seen it, treat that as a serious compromise. Do not follow a stranger’s recovery instructions. Consult verified manufacturer guidance using a fresh, independently confirmed route.

!NEVER disclose your recovery phrase.Legitimate support will not ask you to share it.SEC / 01
04 / TRUST
VERIFICATION LAYER — TRUST, BUT CONFIRM

Check the source.
Check the screen.

Impersonation attempts often imitate familiar product language and urgency. A polished page or helpful tone does not establish authenticity. Verify the web address character by character, reach the manufacturer through a known route, and compare instructions against current official documentation.
